PASTAS & NOODLES: FOOD LAW STATUS IN INDIA (CONTEXT)

Pastas and noodles are leading nutritional foods in India; probably therefore those are not listed in any table of food additives in FSSR (Food Safety and Standards Regulation) 2011. The Regulation clearly indicates that no additive is worth adding to Pastas and noodles and those should be prepared with traditional food ingredients. In Regulation the name ‘Pastas & noodles’ is mentioned at one place only – Food safety and Standards (Food Products standards and Food Additives) Regulations; Chapter 3, substances added to Food, 1.11 Use of Flavour Enhancers 1) Monosodium Glutamate – List of foods where Monosodium Glutamate is not allowed (xiv) Pastas and noodles (only dried products). In this way the regulation also clarifies that MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) can never be added to pastas and noodles. Not only in pastas and noodles, it can’t be added to fruit and vegetable products, except the foods mentioned in appendix A in which it is approved (xxxv); even not in wine (xxxii), Pan masala (l) and alcoholic drinks (li)
